Teachers from all over the world can take this part-time (two and half years duration), five semester Master's degree programme, which is studied entirely online. Developed and delivered collaboratively by the University of Southampton and the British Council, it offers postgraduate level study in key areas of current theory and practice in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching.

What does the course involve?

Taking an innovative approach to online course design and distance learning, the MA content includes, interactive 'learning objects', podcasts and video clips from lectures and seminars given by teaching and research staff at the University of Southampton. There is also extensive use of discussion forums and synchronous communication with other students on your course, as well as the module tutors. Full reading lists are provided as well as access to the university library and its stock of e-books and journals.
Who is it for?
Practising teachers or ELT professionals with a first degree in language teaching, modern languages or other relevant discipline(s), plus two years of relevant professional experience related to English language teaching. International students must also meet the standard English language requirements of the University of Southampton (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).
How long is it?
The taught components of the programme are studied over two years (four semesters). The dissertation is written during semester five.
How is the course assessed?
Assessment at postgraduate taught level tests key skills. Students will be assessed by traditional means and will also manage a large independent research project; the master's dissertation. The dissertation is a core element in establishing the acquisition of appropriate skills and the application of research techniques. Master's tutors will be available to provide regular and supportive advice, guidance and feedback on students' progress.
Students who successfully complete the first four modules will be eligible for the Post Graduate Certificate in English Language Teaching: Online.
