Grammar Goof-ups: Fix Them Once and For All!
English grammar is complex, there are many rules and many exceptions to these rules. Non-native speakers generally make mistakes when it comes to proper grammar usage. Many of these mistakes are due to lack of education when learning the rules of grammar, poor classroom instruction when learning English, or fossilized errors that have not been corrected over time. Often the non-native speaker does not know he/she is making an error and is not corrected by native speakers. This webinar will focus on helping learners to correct their errors and learn strategies to teach forward to their students.
About Daniel
Daniel Hirsch has been working in the field of ESL/EFL since 1997. He worked for the Japanese Ministry of Education as a Coordinator for International Relations, as a Fulbright exchange teacher in Turkey, and as a coordinator and ESL teacher in New York City’s public and private schools. He has also done research on teacher training in Finland. Currently, he is the English Language Fellow in La Paz, Mexico working with over 260 teachers in the state of Baja California Sur, as a teacher trainer and mentor.

YAPSA: Youth Ambassadors Program with South America

Awamaki is proud to present the Youth Ambassadors Program with South America. The program is a three-week youth leadership exchange program of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, administered by Amizade Global Service-Learning and Awamaki. Do NOT contact the U.S. embassy!

The YAPSA program will send 20 Peruvian teenagers as well as 2 adult mentors to the United States from October 15-November 11, 2017. The program aims to engage young adults in Peru and Bolivia, who have a strong sense of civic responsibility, a commitment to community development, an awareness of current & global issues, strong interpersonal leadership skills, willingness to foster relationships among youth from different ethnic, religious, and national groups in Peru and to promote mutual understanding, respect and collaboration between the United States and South America. Participants will be required to implement follow-un activities upon their return home that will help them to stay in touch with each other, reflect on their experiences and integrate that learning into their day-to-day lives at home. An important goal of the program is that the student leaders, now empowered, will train other student leaders through student-led community-oriented service projects.

Awamaki is committed to ensuring a balance between participants of both sexes and to include participants representing diverse cultural, ethnic and geographic locations. Individuals who make it through the initial application review by our panel will be contacted for an interview in late March 2017.

Awamaki es orgulloso presentar El Programa de Jóvenes Embajadores de Sud América. El programa es un intercambio de jovenes y liderezgo de tres semanas del Departamento de Estado de los EEUU, Oficina de Asuntos Educativos y Culturales, administrado por Amizade Global Service-Learning y Awamaki. NO contactar a la Embajada de EE.UU.

El Programa de YAPSA mandará 20 adolescentes peruanos de entre 15 y 17 años y 2 adultos que servirán como mentores a los EEUU 15 de octubre – 11 de noviembre, 2017. El programa tiene como objetivo involucrar a los jóvenes en el Perú que tienen un fuerte sentido de responsabilidad cívica, un compromiso en el desarrollo de su comunidad, una toma de conciencia de los problemas actuales y globales, fuertes habilidades de liderazgo, la voluntad de fomentar las relaciones entre los jóvenes de diferentes grupos étnicos, grupos religiosos y nacionales en Perú y para promover la comprensión mutua, el respeto y la colaboración entre los Estados Unidos y América del Sur. Los participantes tendrán que poner en práctica las actividades de seguimiento a partir de su regreso, cuales ayudarán a mantenerse en contacto unos con otros y reflexionar sobre sus experiencias e integrar ese aprendizaje en sus hogares. Un objetivo importante del programa es que los líderes estudiantiles, ahora facultados, capacitarán a otros líderes estudiantiles a través de proyectos de servicio orientados a la comunidad y dirigidos por los estudiantes.

Las solicitudes deben ser enviadas mediante el sistema electrónico. Se recomienda que los solicitantes lean todas las instrucciones cuidadosamente antes de aplicar.

Se hará lo posible para garantizar un equilibrio entre participantes de ambos sexos y para incluir participantes que representen diversidad cultural, étnica y geográfica. Después de una revisión hecha por nuestro panel, los seleccionados serán contactados para una entrevista en fines de marzo 2017.

Using Authentic Materials in the Classroom
Today, one of the biggest concerns for teachers of English is to prepare learners for real life situations. That involves creating activities that expose students to real English and enable them to communicate with the outside world. One effective way to do so is to plan learning activities which feature authentic materials. Authentic materials will not only expose students to rich language input, but also bring them closer to the target culture. As a result, students will have a sense that they are learning the real language and be able to cope with genuine interaction. This makes the learning process more enjoyable and motivating.
About Roger
Roger Aguirre is an English language teacher who graduated from the National University of Trujillo in 2001. He has also completed a Master's degree program in Higher Education Sciences. Roger has been teaching English for over 15 years at different public and private institutions. In 2011, he won a scholarship funded by IREX of the US Department of State to participate in the Teacher Excellence and Achievement Program for international teachers, hosted by Montana State University. He now works for High Performance School La Libertad (COAR LA LIBERTAD) as English language teacher and English coordinator. Roger is an active member of his school community, where he plays an important role in promoting English language learning in students and helping his colleagues improve their skills.
