The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) can help you change
your life by giving you the skills and qualification you need to teach English all
over the world.
Gain this internationally recognised English teaching qualification as part of an
intensive 4-week course at the British Council Bogota. On the course you will:

* learn the principles of effective teaching
* gain essential subject knowledge
* get real-life experience with teaching practice from day two of the course
* observe experienced teachers at work
* carry out formal written assignments
* receive feedback and guidance from experienced trainers.

Bring along a campfire song and your best scary story!  Ryan Brux, the English Language Fellow based in Tarapoto, Peru, invites you to look at s’more ways to approach intensive English camps, including how to target specific language goals using highly contextualized and content-rich activities. In this program, you will get the opportunity to look at different activities through a language lens, and obtain ideas for how conventional camp activities can be used to effectively target specific language objectives. This webinar will also provide useful resources and strategies for planning camps in your community.

               Language Office for the Andean Region at the U.S. Embassy in Lima.

Who:      Ryan Brux, English Language Fellow.
               Ryan is the English Language Fellow based at the Binational Center in
               Tarapoto, Peru. His interests in the EFL field include: teaching methodology,
               contextualizing language, and project-based learning. Ryan has taught
               ESL/EFL in Thailand, South Korea, the Czech Republic, New York City and
               Seattle, Washington and when not working, is usually found frolicking on a
               trail in a National Park.

Plenary: Promoting Student Engagement in the Classroom
Do you want a classroom full of motivated students that engage with the material and actively participate in their learning? Participants will be led through a framework which encourages teachers to engage students by going beyond interaction. While implementing interactive activities is a good starting point, the presenter will show how we can maximize their potential by considering several complimentary factors in the lesson, classroom, and activities. In this interactive presentation, we will briefl y look at supporting research and background information for each principle of the framework, and consider concrete tips for implementation.

Keynote Speaker:
Lisa Varandani is the Coordinator for TESOL Initiatives at the University of Dayton School of Education and Allied Professions in Ohio, USA. Lisa earned a B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology from Kalamazoo College; an M.A. in TESOL and Teaching Certifi cation in K - 12 ESOL from the School for International Training, Brattleboro VT; and post-master's work in Language, Literacy, and Culture at the University of Massachusetts. With 18 years in the fi eld teaching, training, writing textbooks and in program administration, Lisa's prior experiences include international EFL teaching in Mexico, Ecuador, and Japan; directing the ESOL Education Program for Jewish Vocational Service in Boston, MA; and writing and editing ESOL instructional materials.


Plenary: Using Authentic Assessment to Encourage Active Learning in Foreign Language Classes
The use of simulations, projects, presentations, and other active learning methods in foreign language classes improves learning outcomes and encourages learner autonomy. This presentation will explore how to use principles of authentic assessment to evaluate students' work in active classroom settings, and more importantly, how to use information from the assessments to improve instruction. We will discuss rubrics and other strategies to evaluate real-life learning situations, electronic learning environments, the European Language Portfolio and other portfolio formats at all grade levels.

Keynote Speaker:
Robert Shaw is Dean of the School of Education at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dean Shaw is an educational psychologist who studies conditions that facilitate learning in elementary and secondary classrooms.
Dean Shaw came to Westminster in 2007 after thirty years at Brown University, where he was Executive Associate Dean of the College and a faculty member in the Department of Education. He developed Brown University's nationally-recognized support program for students with learning disabilities in higher education. He was a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Chile, lecturing in ten universities on issues of learning disability in K-12 and higher education.
Dean Shaw graduated from Colegio F. D. Roosevelt in Lima, Peru. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Occidental College and a MA and PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Chicago.
