NEWS

The next IATEFL webinar will be with Jill Hadfield, an IATEFL International Ambassador on 31 May 2014 at 3pm BST. Jill will be talking about ‘Motivation, Imagination and L2 Identity’.

The webinar will deal with recent research on the relationship between motivation and the identity of the learner. This method, known as the L2 Motivational Self System by Zoltán Dörnyei, combines three motivation factors and looks at the use of imagination to enable learners to envision a new identity.  The webinar will cover the theory behind this method, explain how it can promote language learning and suggest practical activities for teachers to use in the classroom.

Go to http://www.iatefl.org/webinars for more information on Jill’s presentation and log in details.

Hope to see you online on 31 May.

Jon Hird answers your questions

1. Turn on the TV or Turn the TV on?

One Grammar to Go reader asks: Is ‘Turn on the TV’ or ‘Turn the TV on’ correct and is there a rule about it?
Both are correct.
Most transitive phrasal verbs can have the object EITHER between the verb and adverb particle:
Can I turn the TV on?    Shall I take my shoes off?    Don’tuse the milk up.

OR after the adverb particle:

Can I turn on the TV?    Shall I take off my shoes?    Don’tuse up the milk.
For some phrasal verbs putting the object between the verb and adverb particle seems to be more common, and for others putting it after the adverb particle seems to be more common, but there is no general rule about this. However, when the object is a long noun phrase, we tend to put it after the adverb particle
I threw away those magazines that Jenny brought with her the other day.

Correction

In last month’s Elementary Lesson Link there was an error on the first page of theOxford Living Grammar Elementary PDF. In grammar explanation 2, the Positive example should have been: I/he/she/it/you/we/they could start on Friday. The Negative example should have been: I/he/she/it/you etc. couldn’t come.
