One Grammar to Go reader asks: Is ‘Turn on the TV’ or ‘Turn the TV on’ correct and is there a rule about it? Both are correct. Most transitive phrasal verbs can have the object EITHER between the verb and adverb particle:  Can I turn the TV on?    Shall I take my shoes off?    Don’tuse the milk up. OR after the adverb particle: Can I turn on the TV?    Shall I take off my shoes?    Don’tuse up the milk. For some phrasal verbs putting the object between the verb and adverb particle seems to be more common, and for others putting it after the adverb particle seems to be more common, but there is no general rule about this. However, when the object is a long noun phrase, we tend to put it after the adverb particle I threw away those magazines that Jenny brought with her the other day.                                        Pearson ELT attended the IATEFL conference in Harrogate in April this year and what a fantastic conference it was!

With a record number of delegates attending the conference the Pearson stand was a hive of activity. Whether visitors wanted to find out about our new products, talk about industry challenges and how Pearson can help overcome these or just join us for a coffee and a chat, we were happy to see so many teachers, industry leaders and authors.



Our theme this year was 'Improving Learning Outcomes' and the importance of testing students' progress. This was reflected in our signature event 'Test, Teach, Test,'

Authors Antonia Clare and David Hill joined Pearson's Ian Wood and Mike Mayor to discuss the limitations teachers and students currently face with understanding English proficiency levels and how we can better measure progress.

We also used the signature event to introduce Progress, the first institutionally administered, fully automated online progress test that accurately measures student progress in English, highlighting strengths and weaknesses to inform teaching.
