Dear ELT Colleagues,
The Regional English Language Office of the U.S. Embassy is interested in supporting innovations in the application of Information Technology to the field of English Language Teaching, with an emphasis on developing tools for teacher education. The Office’s goals include:
· Building a social networking site that serves current and future English language teachers in Peru
· Organizing training sessions that allow teachers to explore the use of Web 2.0 tools to enhance language learning
· Exposing teachers to authentic materials that are available on the Web; ensuring teachers have the know-how to adapt the materials for use in the classroom
In order to support these goals, the Regional English Language Office will provide scholarships to participate in one of two 3-week online courses offered by Professor Michael Krauss of Lewis and Clark College in the U.S. The courses are:
1. “Integrating the Internet into the Classroom” - http://legacy.lclark.edu/~krauss/usia/
2. “Exploring Web 2.0: Tools for Classroom Teaching and Professional Development” - http://legacy.lclark.edu/~krauss/exploring20web/home.html
Requirements of the courses include:
· Keyboarding skills (minimum 30 wpm)
· At least an upper-intermediate level in English
· Familiarity with Internet (email, search, Web 2.0 tools)
· Access to Internet, minimum 1 hour/day for three weeks
· Ability to dedicate approximately 2 hours/day, 5 days/week for three weeks
· Commitment to carry out follow-on teacher training for ELT colleagues
If you are interested in either of these courses, please send an email to reloandes@state.gov by Friday, January 14th, stating:
1. Name, position, institution, contact information
2. Course in which you are interested
3. Reason for your interest (maximum of 250 words)

Abstract and Carmen ‘s Bio Becoming a Culturally-Responsive Educator in Challenging Times
The presentation will be an awareness-raising session that will explore what it entails to be a culturally-responsive teacher /educator (Garcia, 2002). It pursues three objectives. First, educators will experience four culturally responsive activities that can be used during preparation sessions. Second, the rationale on being a culturally responsive educator will be examined so that educators understand the need to incorporate their educatees’ cultural background during educating sessions. Third, educators will be encouraged to reflect on the fact that educatees need to know not only the techniques to deliver a meaningful class, the rationale behind these techniques, the knowledge about the language, as Garcia (2008) puts it, but also that educatees need to become aware of the role that the cultural component plays in learning/ teaching an additional language. The first three elements appear to be explicitly addressed in preparation sessions, but the last one does not. The learning/teaching/educating process can be enhanced if the cultural component is incorporated during learning/educating sessions.

WORLD CHALLENGE 2010!
Now in its sixth year, World Challenge is a global competition aimed at finding projects or small businesses from around the world that have shown enterprise and innovation at a grassroots level. World Challenge is brought to us by BBC World News and Newsweek, in association with Shell and is about championing and rewarding projects and businesses which really make a difference.
Finalists announced:
Denmark Guatemala Rwanda
Tanzania India Malawi
PERU Philippines
Kenya Madagascar
Zambia Mexico
PERUVIAN PROJECT: “Pass It on”
"Yachachiq" is the Inca name for people who pass on knowledge. That's how Sierra Productiva - a federation of peasant's groups - is setting about improving the lot of small farmers in Peru, having started in the ancient Inca capital, Cusco. At elevations of 4000 metres and on precipitous slopes, "improvement" is a formidable undertaking. But through the Yachachiq the campesinos are learning organic techniques to dramatically boost production from both livestock and crops.
The main technology has been harnessing of springs and the use of drip irrigation systems, freeing the farmers from dependence on rainfall that gave them only one harvest a year

[ELTeCS_PERU] ELTeCS wants to grow
Dear ELTeCS PERU Member
I keep saying that our list has over 1000 members (which is true, I swear) but we all know that the community of teachers of English in Peru MUST be much larger than that; the thing is, We´re not reaching all of us out there, and yet I feel the list needs to grow, make more teachers participate, disseminate the information, share our views and experiences, all that. So I remembered the old Beatles´ song and said to myself, why not ask for "a little help from my friends (provided you are my friends... I hope so, I´d be very sad to know I think I have friends and actually I don´t, buuuu)?"
So, here´s the deal, you help me out with finding more members for our list and I keep being your friend (some deal, huh?).
It´s as easy as one two three. Just tell your colleagues that you like the list and all the information you get from it (you like it, don´t you?). All you have to do is send an email to your contacts explaining the simple process to register: Your friends can easily become members by sending the usual blank email at: ELTeCS_PERU-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
The ELTeCS PERU members who gets the most subscriptions will win a trip to London, with a tour of the most important cities, all paid , for him/her, his/her students, closest family and a group of 50 friends of his/her choice (pets not included, sorry).
Let´s see how many more teachers become part of our community. I´ll keep you posted on the progress.
Thanks in advance for your "hand"
Cesar Klauer

[ELTeCS_PERU] Prescott School ELT Conference
Dear ELTeCS PERU Members
This last week, the city of Arequipa hosted the XII Prescott School ELT Conference.
I had the honour of being invited, together with other ELT teachers, to give presentations.
I took the chance to make an experiment (never done before, at least in Peru, I think) and have prepared a report that combines a written chronicle of my participation with videos on which some speakers appear giving exclusive accounts of their topics and the opinions of three teachers who participated in the event. Also, the conference director, Giancarlo Castelo, explains the organisation of the event for us.
I hope you like it.

An invitation to try CAE Speaking Success
Dear Giovanni Gonzales
As a previous subscriber to our guides to the Cambridge FCE and

'CAE Speaking Success' is a 12 Unit online course which prepares
students thoroughly for Paper 5. If you'd like to see it for
yourself we've made Unit 1 available as a free demo. You can sign
up here:
http://www.splendid-speaking.com/form/caespeaking.html
Here's some of the feedback we've had so far:
'I think it's fabulous! I'm really impressed with the lesson I've
just done...You are doing such a wonderful job to help us with
English...THANK YOU!!!'
Lubchik, UK
'Your new learning tool is very useful for both students and
educators. It highlights the typical problems of candidates and
gives clear examples, explanations that help students to be more
aware of these issues during the preparation. The media tool is
attractive and easy to use so working with it was a pleasure.'
Kóródi, Hungary
'What an amazing job! Congratulations to everyone who worked on it.
I'm sure it can make the difference between a bare pass and high
pass in the interview.'
Pollyanna, Greece
'It gave me very useful tips about the exam I wasn't thinking about.
This helps me alot in my preparation for the exam.'
Ghada, Egypt

[ELTeCS_PERU] Impressions on the ELT PERU Networks conference
We have received this text, written by a teacher who attended the latest ELT PERU Networks event and have decided to share it with you all.
Here are my impressions on the ELT_PERU NETWORKS CONFERENCE in Lima on the 2nd and 3rd of July. I really enjoyed it: it was carefully planned and organized, the topics were both interesting and relevant, and the speakers were first-class.
On Friday I enjoyed listening to Andrew Sheehan in “Training the Trainers”. I had already attended another (longer) event on the same topic two years ago, and this was an appropriate complement to it. Andrew always has interesting information to share with ELT teachers, and his vision on the changing world of ELT, which he gave us both Friday and Saturday was certainly enlightening. It will influence my approach to teaching, the materials I will use, and even the materials I’ll purchase in the future.
On Saturday, I enjoyed every speech I attended. Maria Esther Linares talked about and presented to us her experiences in the mentoring program she organized at her school, and it gave me useful ideas to share with the staff in charge of the mentoring program at the institution I work for. Leo Marín gave us great tips about how to deal with adolescents in class. Carol Milk de Reyes had interesting insights about English as a global language. In fact, after I listened to her talk, I had the opportunity to read more about the topic. Norma Bustamante's description of how ELT has changed in Peru gave me an idea of how much we have progressed in the field since my arrival in Peru , and made me reflect on how I have changed and improved my way of teaching during all these years. I also appreciated Graeme Hodgson’s information about the services provided by the British Council.
The ELT_PERU NETWORKS CONFERENCE gave me food for thought, updated my information on the field, even made me feel proud to see how far we, English teachers, have come along in this fast-changing field. We always manage to be aware of the latest developments and try them out.
